But don’t let the majestic buildings, tasteful restaurants, and specialized shops fool you: over 81% of Clayton’s real estate is either zoned residential or city park. Residents here enjoy beautiful well-kept neighborhoods, excellent parks and recreation facilities, and an excellent school system.

Homes in Clayton vary from modern condominiums to stately mansions. Although new construction is rare, a talented real estate agent may be able to locate opportunities from time to time.

History buffs should check out the Martin Franklin Hanley House, a Greek-Revival house typical of many Missouri farms in the pre-Civil War period. Built in 1855, it is on the national register of historic places, and is the oldest structure in the city of Clayton. The site also has several picnic areas, and the grounds play host to several special events per year.

Commuting is easy and convenient in Clayton, with a MetroLink stop conveniently located near the business district and access to highways 64/40 and 170. Much of Clayton is pedestrian friendly and easily walkable, a fact appreciated by businesspeople and school children alike.

The City of Clayton is home to a world class public art collection, including works from Botero, Milles, Ben Tre, Trova. Walking through Clayton on a warm Spring day is a little like walking in a large outodoor art museum. Downtown Clayton is also home to the annual St. Louis Art Fair, which features dozens of artists and entertainers from around the nation.

Restaurants and bars are bountiful in Clayton, offering fine fair from deli sandwiches to decadent feasts. Not wanting to be behind the times, the city even has a mobile app for tourists and residents who want an easy portable guide to the city’s shops and restaurants.

Clayton public schools are some of the best in the area, if not in the nation. Clayton has three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school, and all of them are highly rated and highly regarded. The school district tries to maintain a student/teacher ratio of 11:1 maximum. Most classroom teachers have more than 16 years of experience, and 93 percent hold a master’s degree or higher.

The Center of Clayton | The new center is a 124,000 square foot recreation center, that offers the ultimate experience in sports, fitness, swimming, recreational, educational and lifestyle enhancing programs.

Shaw Park | The largest park within the City of Clayton comprising 47.6 acres. The park environment includes a mixture of mature canopy forest areas located along and through a broad deep ravine with flatter, cleared open space areas surrounding it. The centrally located ravine wooded areas are suitable for picnicking, walking, and seating. The cleared open space areas located both on the west and east sides of the park are used for active recreation opportunities such as ball fields, sand volleyball courts, an outdoor pool, tennis courts and an ice/roller rink. Shaw Park ice rink is one of two outdoor ice rinks in all of St. Louis.

Alamo Park | A .25 acre site in the eastern portion of the City of Clayton in a multi-family neighborhood. The play lot includes benches, vegetation, and pedestrian-scale lighting.

Concordia Park | This park is a 1.5 acre rectangular property which is leased from Concordia Seminary. It has several benches, trash containers, and mature trees. The property is defined and enclosed by a pruned hedge.

DeMun Park | 0.6 acres of level ground and a variety of deciduous, flowering and evergreen vegetation. It includes two use areas – a playground on the southern end of the park for larger children, and a tot-lot on the northern end of the park for toddlers.

Taylor Park | The park is divided into three functional use areas. The first, located in the front of the park near Central Avenue, is passive and includes a gazebo, benches, and a circular concrete walkway. The second functional use area is a tot-lot adjacent to the wood fence at the rear of the park. The third use area is located south of Kingsbury Boulevard, a level turf area with concrete pad contained by a fence has the potential for either passive or active recreation. Currently the third use area functions for dog walking and ball playing.

Oak Knoll Park | Oak Knoll Park is the second largest park within the city limits comprising 14.5 acres. Oak Knoll Park includes several stone mansions, the first of which houses the Clayton Child Center. The second houses the St. Louis Artist Guild classes and exhibits. Other structures include a maintenance building with an attached greenhouse, and a restroom building. Also included in the park are a rose garden, a pond, playground, and a stone pad equipped with several picnic tables and trash receptacles.

Wydown Park - east of Hanley Road on Wydown | This one-acre site is designated as an open play space.
